Alberto goes climbing

No not that one! No stories about contaminated meat, doping inquiries or ASO bans here...this is about the other Alberto. Our own Alberto Monte Rego recently went down to race the Mt Baw Baw classic which is a very tough race. Alberto did really well finishing 4th in Masters 4. Partner Sandra also travelled down to act as DS and here is her report of the race.

Some info about the race including the SBS Cycling Central recap is here.

Thanks to all who completed our 2010 Winter Racing Survey, the feedback is already going into changes for next years racing.

Here is a summary of the results, and here is the detailed report.
Nikolina Orlic had a great ride at the recent Noosa Grand Prix against some of the very best riders in the country. Here is her report - thanks Nik.

2010 Noosa Grand Prix
Wow doesn't time fly when your having fun! Saturday just gone was the USM Events, Noosa Grand Prix criterium. The race each year attracts thousands of spectators and heaps of Pro athlete's to the start line. It was an awesome experience to race against such a classy field of riders.

This year the women's field contained Rochelle Gilmore's Honda Dream Team, recently developed Virgin Blue Team, MB Cycles, QAS and of course our team, Bundaberg Sugar.

Last year I did this race and literally got dropped from word go, pulling out after only a few laps. Looking back one year ago, my heart was definitely in it but my fitness wasn't. I remembered saying to myself in disappointment, that I would come back next year (2010) and give it another go but only to be stronger than ever. And so I did.

My dream came true this year finishing 5th in a break, 3 laps into the race after just missing an early crash.

I set my goal one week before the race and was adamant to finish in the top 5. I knew that if I wanted to achieve such goal I needed to get myself into a good position up the front of the bunch and wait for an opportunity to unfold itself and then just go with it. I had good legs on the day, so I didn't doubt my ability.

The break included myself, Peta Mullens (Honda), Melissa Hoskings (Honda), Laura Luxford (Virgin Blue)and Liz Young (MB). After a few laps together Peta Mullens and Melissa Hoskings jumped and got away from us three finishing 30 seconds ahead. Laura, Liz and I remained together pulling turns and although we couldn't catch the two Honda girls ahead, we maintained our position on the field finishing roughly 40 seconds ahead of the bunch. We were still in it for 3rd, 4th and 5th places. After a long 30 minutes, it all came down to a very close sprint finish with Laura and Liz just rolling me over the line.

Results:
1. Peta Mullens - 0.35.02
2. Melissa Hoskings
3. Laura Luxford - 0.00.36
4. Liz Young - 0.00.37
5. Nikolina Orlic

Well done guys!
With the summer crit season upon us, Fless has written a great article on what type of wheels can work well in crit racing. Click HERE for the article.

There are some other articles in the Documents section that are worth a look, including Kim's article on "winning sprints" that he keeps requesting to have removed, Road training rules, Rest & Recovery, Climbing etc. Just click on Documents on the menu on the left and then select Training Tips.
Hopefully we can get some race reports from our riders who entered the Grafton-Inverell. Richard Brownhill got second in B grade, and Alberto Monte Rego had an off day, feeling sick and climbing off at the first feed zone.

There were a quite a few other Coyote riders, Warren Forbes, Mark Fulloon, Mick Manson, Andrew Charles as well as Adam Robinson, Andy Patten, Clinton Amble, Andrew Pattison, Scott Petterson, Patrick Weinrauch, Andrew Grady, Luke Salter, Tony Hawkins, Darrell Henry, Phil Milham, Matthew Smart,  Brenden Smyth, Chris Brouard, Nikolina Orlic and of course Bryan Ferris.
Last Sunday one of our Elite Women riders Nikolina Orlic was invited to compete in the Herald Sun World Cycling Classic in Ballarat which was used by many of the world's best as a warm up for the Worlds.

Nikolina, riding with her Sweet As.. Bundaberg Sugar teammates, did well to finish 54th out of 130 amongst riders from 14 countries. Nik said she stayed with the main bunch until the last climb at 5km to go and finished 1 minute behind the main bunch and that it was an amazing experience to race against the world's best female cyclist's.

The race was won by Trixi Worrack from Germany from a small 4 rider breakaway with 3 riders bridging across.
