Hamilton Wheelers - Volunteering
The 2018 Presentation night saw Warren Jones take out the winners $500 bonus for fulfilling his club Volunteer duty during the last twelve months. Every time a member acted as a volunteer their name went into the draw from some 331 members.
The night also marked the start of the next "Volunteer Roster" year, so it is important that all members be aware of the new roster start date and begin nominating a day that suits them to act as a volunteer. It is club policy that every member act in this role at least once every year. You can nominate your spot in the on-line calendar HERE
It is also club policy that if you go to nominate for an event the third time in the ensuing year and have not nominated a roster date you will not be allowed to race until you do.
For the coming year each time you volunteer you will receive a "Race Pass" that entitles you to tender that instead of money to enter any Hamilton Wheelers event (except our annual open events -Anzac 25 & Track Carnival). You also get 2 points in the 2019 Winter Aggregate pointscore if you volunteer at an event during the winter race season.
Finally, you will also get an entry into the Volunteer draw at the 2019 Presentation night. This year the prize will be your 2020 CA licence fee instead of the $500 voucher, so it is really worthwhile to do your bit for the club and be in the draw!

HWCC 2018 Presentation night
The night was ably conducted by MC Dave Cook for the 74 attending and saw the presentation of the club Championship medals and Jerseys to those that were the winners in each category, the various trophy race winners and the medals to the Century riders.
The winter pointscore aggregate trophy and cheque went to Andy Patten who won convincingly on 119 points from Eric Van Driel (86) and Ren Bao Tsen (84).
The other major award winners this year were:-
-
President's Award - John Madigan
-
Volunteer Award (Presented by Neil Jackson) - Joe Hughes
-
Most Improved rider - Eric Van Driel
-
Most Improved Junior - Ren Bao Tsen
The "Race of Champions" novelty event was won by Mark Creaby for his "sponsor" Matt Smart.
Unfortunately, Mark was unable to break the Pinkenba course record recently set by Andy Patten.

National Masters Road Championship 2018
Queenslanders have had some great results at the 2018 Cycling Australia Masters Road National Championships in East Gibbsland Victoria.
Andy Patten won GOLD in the Masters 5 ITT and Colin Howkins BRONZE in the Masters 9 ITT. Both riders have been in fine form recently.
Phil Kesby also made it back to back championships in the Masters 6 Road Race. We don't see much of Phil as he spents a lot of his time training and racing in Europe. One of his fellow competitors passed on this message:
"Would just like to pass on a kind word of the representative from your club who won the masters men 6 Australian championships in the road race - Phil Kesby. First of all, congratulations on a fine ride, you deserved it , and thanks for the kind words of encouragement during the race. I was very happy with my own performance but your words to me have given me good reason to continue at this level after many yrs away from it. Thankyou very much great sportsman ship on Phil's behalf. Hope to race against Phil again next year.
Your club can hold your head high."
From Cycling Australia:
Phil Kesby National Champion MM6 for the second year in a row
Back to back National Titles for Phil Kesby of Hamilton Wheelers defending his MM6 title won on the Gold Coast 2017 with convincing performance at Swan Reach Victoria.
Phil Kesby (Hamilton Wheelers CC) was first to cross the line in the MM6 road race having made a gutsy break from the peloton 3kms from home. His lead was nearly chased down; however, Kesby remained strong to take the line. Metres before the checkered flag Kesby sat up and punched the air, soaking up his title after a winning in dry, warm conditions.
His second National Title follows a successful 2018 season of racing;
1st Marcello Bergamo, Borgomanero (IT) - Road race M6
5th Don Guanella, Lecco (IT) - Road race M6
4th Ale La Merckx, Verona (IT) - Road race M6
2nd Alpi Ligure, Carcare (IT) - Road race M6
1st San Maurizio, San Stefano Belbo (IT) - Road race M6 (9th on GC)
1st Torino Internationale (IT) - Road race M6 (33rd on GC)
1st Australian Masters National Championships - Road race M6
Not bad when you consider Phil only started racing in March 2015! Encouragement for all those who are thinking about getting into racing.
Result: Masters Men 6

Harry Sweeny 10th overall at Tour de Langkawi
Hamilton member Harry Sweeny had a great Tour de Langkawi jumping up to 2nd on GC after a fantastic effort in a 4 man breakaway on stage 3 in 40 degree heat. Harry then held onto 3rd overall after the very steep Cameron Highlands stage. On the final stage he double punctured with 6km to go and slipped from 5th to 10th overall. Great stuff!![](/images/hamilton/29414656_426043297821042_4707531984618913792_n.jpg)
